A refugee crisis that started as a humanitarian challenge has become a question about long-term assimilation in Germany, as Traub has written, just like it has in other European countries. The task at hand is to integrate “an enormous number of people who are, by and large, Muslim in a place that is, of course, chiefly Christian; who are pious in a place that is chiefly secular; and who, on average, are poorly educated in a place where the economy depends increasingly on high education and high skills,” he explains.

Something unmentioned in establishment liberal publications like The Atlantic is that Muslims intend to make the areas they move to Muslim. This is what Islam tells them to do. While political elites and The Atlantic talk about “integration,” domestic Germans talk about moving away from Muslim areas in Germany. All of the elites in Germany, that propose integration, live in entirely German (i.e. non-Muslim immigrant) areas.

Ukraine’s experience also spotlights the fact that, try as they might, governments can do little to arrest emigration and depopulation, whether through populist right-wing programs to incentivize having babies or via financial handouts for returning émigrés. And while many Western countries, including the United States, have focused on the supposed perils or promise of greater immigration, others, such as Ukraine, illustrate the significant cost of a falling population, from the shallow labor force to the nearly abandoned towns that dot the landscape.

Why young Ukrainians leave places like this is no mystery. The country is Europe’s second-poorest, beset by corruption and low living standards, and it shares a border with the European Union. Furthermore, a war with Russia-backed separatists still wages in the east, and has displaced 2 million people, many internally. (Ukraine’s depopulation problem is also tied to high mortality rates: According to Ella Libanova, the director of the Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies at the National Academy of Sciences, 30 percent of 20-year-old Ukrainian men won’t make it to their 60th birthday, thanks in large part to alcohol abuse and road accidents.)

By all indications, Poland is an economic success, but Poles still travel Europe in search of better jobs. Nothing depends on us.” Clarkson also believes that, if current trends continue, Ukraine is destined to suffer the same fate as the rest of Central Europe: labor shortages at home while locals work abroad. “Give it 20 years, and Ukrainians will be complaining about Afghan migrant workers,” he said.

For now, the reality on the ground in Ukraine is grim enough. In Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih, streets are festooned with advertisements promising work in the EU, mostly in Poland, Lithuania, and Romania. “Zelensky is like so many people I know from here,” Ruslan Ibragimov, a local activist, told me. “As soon as they become successful, they leave.”

Thirteen years ago, in 2002, when my book Berlin: The Downfall was published, the Russian ambassador in London, Grigori Karasin (now deputy foreign minister), accused me of “lies, slander and blasphemy against the Red Army” and then invited me to lunch. “A vodka lunch, just the two of us,” he proposed, rather to my surprise. I was glad to accept and we discussed the treatment of the past. He made the valid point that the horrors and hardships that the Soviet people had undergone over at least three generations – the first world war, the revolution and civil war, the famines, the purges and the unspeakable suffering of the Nazi invasion – meant that even those opposed to Stalinism saw the victory in 1945 as “sacred”. By including the mass rapes I would be causing great offence.

Reports from NKVD rifle divisions in East Prussia covered the suicides of German women who could not face any more assaults. These were sent to Lavrenti Beria, the head of the NKVD, and to Stalin. The diaries of Soviet war correspondents and officers recount what they saw. One female journalist described the troops as “an army of rapists”, but that is going too far. Not all raped, and many devout communists were appalled by the behaviour of fellow soldiers.

Yes, the poor Russian people would have to come to terms with what their soldiers and their system did.

Polish art student installed a life-sized sculpture in a Gdansk public square of a Red Army soldier raping a pregnant woman, his activism provoked a storm of angry reactions from Russians and Poles. Critics claimed that the image of a serviceman holding a gun to a woman’s head dishonored the memory of Soviet troops and was an inappropriate commemoration of victims of wartime rape.

According to Skrabski, it’s possible that as many as 800,000 Hungarian women were raped, and the violence included gang rape and sexual torture. Pregnancy resulting from rape was so widespread that the government suspended its ban on abortions for several months during 1945, offering abortion and STD treatment services free of charge.

Under post-war Communism, not only was it forbidden for Hungarians to criticize the Red Army, but they were required to celebrate the Soviets as their anti-fascist liberators. The women who had been raped were systemically silenced. In the film, Mrs. Lajos Vincze remembers: “You never brought the subject up—even indirectly. Forget it—that was the word. We tried to forget it.”

In a series of riveting film segments, Skrabski challenges former Soviet soldiers to recall their wartime experiences. Sitting in full regalia in the Hall of Glory of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, the Red Army veterans deny mass rape, argue that the women infected the serviceman with STDs (not the other way around), and claim that sex was mostly consensual.

“This is a dodgy area,” said Beevor. “Germans are reluctant to criticize Russia for what happened 60 years ago.

“What I found researching Stalingrad were copies of documents sent to the political department of the Red Army,” the historian explained. “The archives show that they knew damn well that mass rape was going on and the troops were out of control.”

Nowadays, the German government is keen to keep good relations with Vladimir Putin’s Russia, which may keep official reaction to the book muted, Beevor said.

After three days of mass rape, looting and killings in Berlin–underscored by women jumping off balconies and Nazis killing their own families to prevent their capture–the city became oddly quiet on the fourth day, Frintrop recalls.

The officers and commanders had reined in their troops. It was on this day, with no running water to wash herself or prevent infection, that Frintrop made it to a nearby doctor’s office.

“I heard horrible stories from the women there–women whose breasts were partially bitten off or with genital injuries,” she recalled.

“A lot of women tried to save themselves by saying they had sexually transmitted disease but it usually made the rape worse because the soldiers would get so angry.”

Naimark also notes the allegedly patriarchal nature of Russian culture, and of the Asian societies comprising the Soviet Union, where dishonor was in the past repaid by raping the women of the enemy.[26] The fact that the Germans had a much higher standard of living visible even when in ruins “may well have contributed allegedly to a national inferiority complex among Russians”. Combining “Russian feelings of inferiority”, the resulting need to restore honor, and their desire for revenge may be the reason many women were raped in public as well as in front of husbands before both were killed.

According to Antony Beevor, revenge was not the only reason for the frequent rapes; but the Soviet troops’ feeling of entitlement to all types of spoils of war, including women, was an important factor as well. Beevor exemplifies this with his discovery that Soviet troops also raped Soviet and Polish girls and women that were liberated from Nazi concentration camps as well as those who were held for forced labour at farms and factories.

Geoffrey Roberts writes that the Red Army raped women in every country they passed through, but mostly in Austria and Germany: 70,000–100,000 rapes in Vienna, and “hundreds of thousands” of rapes in Germany. He notes that the German Army probably committed tens of thousands of rapes on the Eastern Front, but that murder was the more typical crime for them.

The first Russian troops to fight in Berlin consisted mostly of Mongolians, who were very unkempt and sloppy. They had Asian features [43] Even the Young German- Jewish fugitive Inge Deutschkron, described her first “Russian” as small, with crooked legs and “a typical mongolian face with almond eyes and high cheekbones “.

Accounts of rape of German women by Mongolian soviet army had also been recorded. For example, a letter from July 24, 1945 by a German female victim wrote:

“I hereby certify that at the end of April this year during the Russian march into Berlin I was raped in a loathsome way by two Red Army soldiers of Mongol/Asiatic type.”

Eye witness from females in the battle of Berlin, 1945 also describe Soviet soldiers of Mongolian type.

“The next morning, we women proceeded to make ourselves look as unattractive as possible to the Soviets by smearing our faces with coal dust and covering our heads with old rags, our make-up for the Ivan. We huddled together in the central part of the basement, shaking with fear, while some peeked through the low basement windows to see what was happening on the Soviet-controlled street. We felt paralyzed by the sight of these husky Mongolians, looking wild and frightening.

However, most rapes did not result in pregnancies, and many pregnancies did not result in the victims giving birth. Abortions were the preferred choice of rape victims, and many died as a consequence of internal injuries after being brutally violated, untreated sexually transmitted diseases due to a lack of medicine, badly performed abortions, and suicides, particularly for traumatised victims who had been raped many times. In addition, many children died in post-war Germany as a result of widespread starvation, scarce supplies, and diseases such as typhus and diphtheria. The infant mortality in Berlin reached up to 90 percent.

As to the social effects of this sexual violence Norman Naimark notes:

In any case, just as each rape survivor carried the effects of the crime with her till the end of her life, so was the collective anguish nearly unbearable. The social psychology of women and men in the Soviet zone of occupation was marked by the crime of rape from the first days of occupation, through the founding of the GDR in the fall of 1949, until—one could argue—the present.

West Berliners and women of the wartime generation refer to the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park, Berlin, as the “tomb of the unknown rapist” in response to the mass rapes by Red Army soldiers in 1945 during and after the Battle of Berlin.
